The 2023 Toyota RAV4 gets a little tougher in Japan with the newly released Offroad Package II. It is somewhat similar to the RAV4 TRD Off-Road available in the United States but with additional powertrain and color options.
The Offroad II package gives the Japanese market RAV4 a suspension lift of 0.39 inches (10 millimeters). It also equips the crossover with a set of 18-inch wheels finished in matte black and 225/60 all-terrain tires.
Toyota adds textured trim to the bodywork and calls the shade of these parts Gori Gori Black. With the monotone paint option, this trim appears on the lower front fascia, wheel wells, mirror caps, side sills and rear bumper. Choosing the two-tone body color adds this accent to the top of the nose.
In monotone, the Offroad II package is available in Super White II, Gray Metallic and Attitude Black Mica. Bi-color options are Attitude Black Mica and Urban Khaki or Attitude Black Mica and Grayish Blue.
Inside, this model receives details in red and black. The seats have perforated synthetic leather upholstery.
The RAV4 with Offroad Package II is available with two engines in Japan. There’s a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder that makes 169 horsepower (126 kilowatts) and 153 pound-feet (207 Newton-meters) of torque. The other option is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with hybrid assistance. Toyota’s Japanese market spec sheet does not list total system power, but this configuration produces 219 hp (163 kW) in the US.
The Offroad Package II with the 2.0-liter engine costs 3,884,000 yen ($26,845 at current exchange rates). The 2.5-liter hybrid brings the cost to 4,503,000 yen ($31,119).
Beyond the Offroad Package II, Toyota has a few small updates for the rest of the RAV4 lineup in Japan. The safety tech suite gains a pre-collision system that can now detect vehicles turning right at intersections and pedestrians crossing the street when turning right or left. Vehicles with the 10.5-inch infotainment screen now have an in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot. In addition, the digital rear view mirror now has a recording function.
If you’re looking for a rugged RAV4 in the US, there’s both the TRD Off-Road model and the newer Hybrid Woodland Edition. The latest model features a built-in 120 volt inverter that can run household items while off the grid. It also has a TRD-tuned suspension.
